The Hawaii State DCCA Physical Therapy Board met Tuesday, January 8th 2013.  The DCCA executive officer Kenyatta Nichols announced that the Governor's office and the Attorney General's office had made some minor revisions to the PTA Licensure bill which was submitted by the DCCA PT Board.  The proposal for the bill includes the "grandfathering clause" suggested by Ho'okahi Leo and the ILWU.  The PT Board Chairperson +Charles"Bo"Aki announced that the PT board designated +Kenyatta Nichols and +Michael Turner PT to address the State Legislature for the bills being submitted by the PT Board.  The Board stated that anyone willing to send letters to the Governor to support  should do so.  (Note: Ho`okahi Leo subsequently emailed 33 letters of support for the bill to Governor Abercrombie's office)

Representatives from +Ho`okahi Leo and the ILWU were present to monitor and support the PTA licensure bill.  A representative from HAPTA was also present and stated support for the PTA Licensure bill and willingness to help lobby for the bills [titled HB843 and SB1074].

The other bill being submitted by the Hawaii DCCA PT Board is for Physical Therapist Continuing Competency requirements.

Anyone in support of Hawaii State licensing for PTAs should write an email, letter, or comment on this blog and we will see that it reaches the appropriate committee.  A sample letter is listed in a blog post on this site.

If you have questions or concerns please leave post a comment or contact a Ho`okahi Leo officer listed on this blog's main page at ptasofhawaii@gmail.com.  Mahalo!  (Note: After this posting date the Governor submitted the PTA Licensure bill to the State Legislature as part of his 2013 Legislative Package)  +

  2. I'm 16 and I have mitochondrial disease. I went to physical therapy two times and it made me significantly regress and my doctor recently gave me a prescription for both therapies. I've done research but I'm honestly having trouble seeing the difference between the two. He sent me to both to learn to "conserve energy" if that helps he's sending me to an adult clinic too

    1. Aloha Alice Anne,
I applaud you on your personal courage to post your information on this page. Thank you for your comment please email us if further information is needed but I urge you to continue to go more than the two visits you have done with PT and ask your therapist their plan of care for you. Sometimes it seems like regression prior to a breakthrough. as well as OT to explain to you their energy conservation techniques differences with the strength, endurance and flexibility training you do in restoration versus adaptive therapy that feel like you are doing in both treatment. Best of luck to you in your journey ..please email me if more concerns at jus4cris@me.com.

  3. A required degree is very necessary for becoming a certified physical therapist. I’m also doing my study for this purpose because I also want to become therapist and serve the humanity.
